Before you decide

What your houseneeds first.

Tankless only makes sense where the house can take it. Three things decide that.

  • An exterior wall→For the intake and exhaust venting
  • Gas or propane→Close to where the unit will hang
  • Wall space→To mount the unit

Coming off a tank also means new venting, core holes, gas work and plumbing changes. That is the difference between the two price columns below. If your house does not have the right conditions, the price changes or tankless is not the right call, and we will tell you which before you commit to anything.

A swap is a like-for-like tankless replacement: the venting, gas and nearby plumbing are already in place, which is why it costs less. The A2 models have a built-in recirculation pump and buffer tank. Tank water heater prices are on our water heater replacement page.

Tank or tankless

A tank costs less up front.Tankless does not run out.

A tank stores hot water and reheats it all day. A tankless unit heats water only when a tap is open, so it does not run out partway through a second shower, and it gives you floor space back.

The trade-off is the price. A like-for-like 50 gallon power-vented gas tank is $2,900 plus HST, against $4,600 and up for tankless replacing a tank.

Hard water matters here. Scale builds up inside anything that heats water, including a tankless heat exchanger, and Navien’s warranty does not cover scale damage. Across most of Waterloo Region, a water softener protects it.

Questions we get asked

Tankless water heater FAQ

How much does a tankless water heater cost to install?

A Navien tankless replacing a tank is $4,600 to $5,650 plus HST, depending on the model. Replacing an existing tankless is $3,300 to $4,500 plus HST. Every price includes the unit, the installation and a new mixing valve.

Why does replacing a tank cost more than replacing a tankless?

Coming off a tank needs new venting, core holes through the wall, gas work and plumbing changes. When you replace a tankless, all of that is already there.

Can every house have a tankless water heater?

No. It needs an exterior wall for the venting, gas or propane near the unit and wall space to mount it. We check before you commit.

How long does a tankless water heater last?

A tankless unit often lasts 15 to 20 years or more with regular maintenance, compared with about 8 to 12 years for a tank.

What warranty do I get?

Navien’s residential warranty covers the heat exchanger for 15 years, parts for 5 years and labour for 1 year, from the date of installation. It requires installation by a licensed contractor and regular maintenance, and it does not cover damage from hard water scale. Our own 1-year workmanship warranty covers the installation when we supply the unit and parts.
