Older Cambridge homes
The City of Cambridge says lead water service pipes were common before the mid-1950s, and the pipe underground can still be lead even if the plumbing inside the house was replaced. Leaks on the private side of the line are the owner’s cost.
The City offers lead testing: call 519-621-0740 or email [email protected]. If the line needs replacing, we give you a written price. See pipe repair and repiping.
Plumbing in Cambridge
Cambridge is on the Region’s water, but its wells, its bylaws and its history make some jobs come up more here.
Sodium
The Region’s water quality report shows sodium well above 100 mg/L at several Cambridge wells. If you watch your sodium, a reverse osmosis system takes most of it out of your drinking water.
Backflow
Under the City’s Water Use By-law, most buildings other than some residential need backflow devices. Devices are tested every year by a City-licensed tester, a cross-connection survey is needed every 3 years, and a failed device has to be repaired or replaced within 48 hours.
Hard water
Cambridge water is hard, and it scales up water heaters and fixtures. A softener sized to your household fixes it.
Flooding
Cambridge still remembers the 1974 Galt flood. Today, the most common basement flood is a failed sump pump or a backed-up floor drain, and a backwater valve or a battery backup helps.

Questions we get asked
Our service call is $225 plus HST, covering the trip and the first 1.5 hours of work. Water heaters, softeners, backflow tests and many other jobs have published prices, and larger jobs get a written price before we start.
It might if it was built before the mid-1950s. The City of Cambridge says the pipe underground can still be lead even if the plumbing inside was replaced. Call the City’s lead testing line at 519-621-0740. If the line needs replacing, we price your side in writing and pull the permit.
The City says leaks on private property are the owner’s responsibility. We confirm where the leak is first, then give you a written price for the repair or replacement.
Under the City’s Water Use By-law, most buildings other than some residential need backflow prevention. Testable devices are tested every year by a City-licensed tester, a cross-connection survey is required every 3 years, and failed devices must be repaired or replaced within 48 hours. We test, report and file for you.
Some Cambridge wells test high for sodium in the Region’s water quality reports. Reverse osmosis removes most of it at the kitchen tap. A new system under the sink is about $750 plus HST.
Most homes benefit from one, because the water is hard enough to scale water heaters, faucets and dishwashers. A 30,000 grain softener, right for most households of two to four on city water, is $1,500 plus HST installed.
